The Spider Scaglietti will be sold by the French auction house Artcurial Motors, and boasts the claim to fame that Stirling Moss drove it to victory at the 1958 Cuban Grand Prix. The car is a former Le Mans lap record holder and had a winning season in 1957. At that time it was common for races to be held on public roads with minimal safety concerns for drivers and spectators. A Ferrari 335 S Spider was mostly responsible for putting an end to legal road racing as it was known at that time when one of those cars crashed into a crowd, killing two drivers and nine spectators at the Mille Miglia in Italy. As of now the expected price for the 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti is expected to fall just short of the record price of the Ferrari 250 GTO. But, anything can happen! Sometimes these classic Ferraris end up selling for more than expected, so this car certainly does have a decent chance of setting a new record. Artcurial’s auction will feature other classic Ferraris such as a 1962 250 GT Berlinetta that was once owned by the King of Morocco and a 1963 250 GT short wheel base Berlinetta. Artcurial Motorcars’ managing director Matthieu Lamoure issued a statement describing the Spider Scaglietti as “Both a Work of Art and the Queen of Speed, this represents the elixir of the exceptional: beauty, rarity, racing success, history, authenticity and provenance!” The car features a 3.8 liter V12 Tipo engine capable of 400 horsepower and has belonged to Pierre Bardinon since 1970. This Ferrari can now be yours if you don’t mind paying more than anyone ever has for a car in the history of mankind.
